Homeowner Tip of the Week- 11/5

Do you have a door in your home that rubs against the frame or gets stuck certain times of the year? This can be annoying and even create serious obstacles for more vulnerable homeowners.

To stop your door from rubbing or getting stuck, first determine where it’s happening. Once you’ve figured that out, there are a couple of ways to solve it. The easiest way is to adjust the door hinge screws. Depending on which part of your door is getting stuck, loosen or tighten the top or bottom screws. For example, if the top of your door on the side with the handle is the culprit, try loosening the top hinge screws and tightening the bottom ones. You may need to adjust the middle screws too.

Sometimes this still doesn’t work. Your second option is to remove the screws and hinge completely from the door frame. Then insert a thin piece of cardboard (acting similar to a wooden shim, however wooden shims are too thick) behind the hinge and screw the hinge back on.

If the problem is still not solved, you may have to take a more serious approach like routing out material from your door or trimming down material with a planer.
