Homeowner Tip of the Week- 10/15/19

This week’s tip, unfortunately, is about preparing for winter. As the temperatures drop, it’s better to get ahead of winter than to wait for it to hit you unexpectedly. Below are some things you can do get your home and property ready for the cold and snow.

  • Rake your leaves- the leaves may look pretty on the ground, but they can inhibit spring growth and even lead to a fine from the city.

  • Clean your gutters- once the leaves have fallen, clean your gutters and downspouts to prevent water from pooling and ruining your roof and siding.

  • Seal gaps- critters only need a small hole to enter your house and raid your pantry.

  • Check your walkways, railings, and stairs- once snow hits the ground, it will be hard to see where the bumps and cracks are. Try and get them fixed before then for easier navigation around your property.

  • Stock up- make sure you have working shovels, ice-melt, and wood so you don’t have to risk the store running out by the time you get there.

  • Drain hoses- be sure to shut off water to exterior faucets, drain your hoses, and store them inside.

  • Remove your window A/C units- if you haven’t already, be sure to remove your window A/C unit to prevent drafts.
